Yesterday, I stumbled upon this topic that I never really thought much about before: why someone might want to measure their penis. At first, it seemed a bit random, but as I read more, I realized there are actually some pretty valid reasons—both medical and practical.
For starters, knowing your penis length and girth can help you choose the right condom size. I never really thought about how important that is until now. If a condom is too loose, it could slip off or tear because of extra friction, which is obviously not ideal. On the other hand, if it’s too tight, it can be uncomfortable, reduce sensation, and even cause you to lose your erection. Plus, tight condoms are more likely to break, which defeats the whole purpose of using one in the first place. Basically, the wrong size condom can increase the risk of STIs or unplanned pregnancy, so getting the right fit is super important.
But beyond the practical stuff, there’s also a psychological aspect to it. Some guys struggle with body dysmorphia or confidence issues related to their size. Measuring and comparing your stats to the average can actually help with that. It might sound a little weird, but knowing you’re within the average range—or even above average—can be reassuring. And hey, you might even find out you’re bigger than you thought! 😁😁

To measure erect penis size, here are the steps to follow. This procedure shows you how to measure your erect penis length to be able to compare it to serious penis size studies. What you see here is known as the bone-pressed method of measuring a penis.

How to measure your penis length?
- Stand up. Give yourself an erection.
- Orientate the penis shaft to be perpendicular to the ground
- Place a ruler on top of your shaft and press it to your skin until you feel a solid wall. This “wall” is the pubic bone.
- Take the measure by really looking above your glans penis. (Head of the penis)
- Don’t forget to subtract the starting blank space from the ruler.
The average erect penis is a little over 5 inches (13 centimeters) long. It’s available at Worlddata.info
Some people are wondering, “what is the difference between the bone pressed measurement procedure and the nonbone pressed measurement procedure?”. In the nonbone pressed measurement, you don’t press the ruler to your skin.
- Non-bone pressed measurement: Penis length from meatus to pubo-penile junction
- Bone pressed measurement: Penis length from meatus to pubic bone. (Penis shaft length + fat pad length).
However, the nonbone pressed measurement method is not reliable because of the fat pad length. Some men are fatter than others. Fat makes you lose penis length size when fat is accumulating under your skin below your belly. Thus, we cannot compare two individuals using the non-bone pressed measurement. A man cannot even compare himself from one day to another since he may gain or lose weight.
By the way, a good ruler is necessary. The following ruler is marked with inches on one side and cm on the other. But more importantly, the marking almost starts at the ruler’s edge. Since the rule is made in wood, you can slightly plane the ruler edge to start the marking at the very beginning of the ruler. It will prevent you to make mistakes when you look at your penis size. It will also ease the measurement procedure.

How to measure your penis girth?
- An erection is required to get an accurate measurement
- Orientate your shaft to be perpendicular to the ground.
- You need to wrap a tape measure around your penis shaft at midshaft.
- Slightly tighten the tape measure. Measure the circumference of your erect penis around the middle of the shaft. Read the number where the beginning of the tape measure is located.
Note:
- If you get an erection from sleep or nap, your erection may not be as good as an erection induced by sexual arousal or viagra.
- We choose this orientation to facilitate the number’s reading.
- Penis glans may vary between individuals. It is more accurate to take the measurement at mid-shaft. This is also where medical studies do locate their penis girth measurement.
- If you’re using string, mark where the end of the string meets the rest of it. Then, straighten out the string and use a ruler to measure the distance from the mark to the end.
